Exactly. And I suppose there’s something of a line to be drawn between enjoying a song on, say, a free medium like the radio or Youtube and actually buying an album or a book. But I guess it makes sense that both intellectually or monetarily supporting somebody like that is something of an endorsement of that behavior. I mostly think about intellectually supporting despicable people, but there are problems with buying albums and books and dvds too.
And there are, of course, ranges of evil. For instance, there are people that say very questionable things. That’s an issue. And then there are people that beat adult women. That’s a bigger issue. Then there’s John Travolta, who should be in jail for effectively murdering his son. There’s something in my brain that allows me to watch John Travolta’s films without thinking about that, maybe because I’m a big cinematography fan and I’m used to separating these issues. But the dude should be in jail. He’s an utter piece of shit.
Should I not buy movies that John Travolta acts in? This is a big question, because we are a culture that is infamous for having no ability whatsoever to discern between reality and entertainment.
This is really, seriously giving me something to think about.
for some reason i have a really hard time separating art from the artist* when it is musicians, but when it’s acting, i will let a ton of sub par behaviour go. i don’t totally know why, though i imagine it has something to do with feeling like muscians are ‘real people’ but actors are hollywood constructs. which is totally wrong.
*i have a hard time even fully enjoying music unless i have some reason to think the musicians are cool (cool = by my political/social standards)
