I hate Zooey Deschanel so much, or at least the public persona thereof - the product she’s selling, so to speak.

I hate that shit.

But New Girl is a really good show, and not just because it is not (surprisingly) a vehicle for her unassuming quirkiness. Her character is good, all the characters are. It deals with complex personal relationships, early adulthood (money, jobs), and it comes off as being really genuine. Also, Lizzy Caplan.

There.

i don’t hate zooey deschanel.  i do hate she and him, as a band, because it is just terrible.  i guess i didn’t know anything about her offscreen persona.  i knew she was always cast as the manic pixie dream girl, which was annoying, and at first i thought this show was going to be like that to the ultimate.  so i didn’t watch it.

but my roommate did and she said she really liked it, and she is the best, so i watched 3 episodes in a row and you know, i think it’s actually great and now i’ve seen all of it.  it’s really funny. and her character isn’t so unrealistic.  she is weird and has to deal with people thinking she’s weird (which they do).  the conflict between her and lizzy caplans character was real.  and the other characters are also weird, and also real and also funny.  and she’s not the only girl on the show (i hope lizzy caplan sticks around) and everyone keeps being upset that jess would get together with that one dude, AS IF IT HAS ALREADY HAPPENED, but it hasn’t.

anyway, i don’t think her character is supposed to be charming because of her weird clothes.  she is genuinely awkward, which a lot of us ladies are. or feel we are. i like that she is so unexperienced in sex/relationships post-breakup.  because that is fucking true to life.  my life anyway.

and her character is not there to redeem or change the other characters, they are all affecting eachother, which, you know, is how life works.

i think the real flaw of the show was framing it around her character.  that’s why people get the ‘omg i’m so quirky!’ vibe from it when if it wasn’t set up as about -her- she’d just be a weird character.  like focusing Taxi on Jim or Seinfeld on Kramer.  hell, elaine was pretty freaking awkward.

the episode with the landlord was so good. omg.
